What do you think is the most popular type of paving surface for driveways across Essex?
IF we separate out the vast majority of driveways that still have dated crumbling tarmacadam, wonky slabs and nothing but CRAZY paving; what’s left? Modern and stylish block paving designs are making an impact in some areas, as are homeowners choosing decorative paving solutions such as pattern imprinted concrete and resin bound paving.
Essex has excellent links into London and across the county most take pride in the look of the outside of their house. There are many densely populated suburban areas which increase the demand for parking and of course allow councils to impose many parking restrictions. Due to demand for housing across the county, many houses have different generations living under one roof- all having parking needs to match. If you think that some driveways may need to accommodate 3-4 cars and then then multiply this by the number of densely packed houses – a lot of parking is required!
Pattern imprinted concrete is available in a range of colours and patterns. The installations process is quick and the cost is comparatively lower than other driveway surfacing options such as QUALITY block paving. We stress the quality part here as there really is no point in using cheap and ‘nasty‘ blocks.
Another driveway surface that offers low maintenance, easy installation and low cost is Resin. BUT care is needed as not all resins are equal.
If you’re familiar with Google and business directories you’ll know how hard it can be sometimes to make an informed choice with so much information to deal with.
That’s why we’ve compiled a trusted guide and review of driveway contractors operating across Essex including local areas such as Chelmsford, Billericay, Brentwood, Ongar, Woodford Green, Epping, Loughton and of course Chigwell.
Our reviews are based on quality of work, variety of designs and of course professionalism of drive installations.

Driveways Essex – Who, What, When?
Block Paving – Many areas within Essex including Chelmsford, Ongar, parts of Epping, Loughton and Billericay are noticeably in need of upgrading. Many block paving installations observed are just not taking advantage of the many newer choices of block paving available. This is surprising when you think of how big an impression the outside of any home makes.
Older Style Faded Block Paving
Resin Bound – This type of paving surface is growing in popularity (especially as an overlay). Whilst many homes throughout Essex are traditional builds we expect to see demand for resin bound installations across Essex to increase going forwards into 2020.
Pattern Imprinted Concrete – This decorative paving product is proving to be a popular choice across Essex, especially in more densely populated areas where there are parking restrictions. Ease of installation, stunning designs and a wide choice of colours are just some of the reasons for homeowners choosing this product.
Care must be taken with selecting the best contractor/installer, as some installations were noticeably better than others.

Tarmacadam Driveways across Essex – as expected this is the least popular driveway surfacing choice. Older tarmacadam driveways appear crumbly and many crack up. If you have this as an existing driveway surface…..it really is time to upgrade.
Driveways Essex – Summary
Overall our research shows that the demand for resin is increasing. This appears to be the modern driveway surface of choice, especially for overlays. Exercising caution is prudent, however! It’s necessary to ensure a surface is good for an overlay in the first place…..if in doubt, be sure to ask about suitability first and not last.
Pattern Imprinted Concrete is retaining it’s place as the most popular paving choice and we expect this to continue into the future. The most popular imprinted drive designs are slate and cobble in combinations of Steel and Platinum Grey colour combinations.
Overall, block paving seems to be declining as a paving surface of choice. It’s noticeable that many upgrades are needed as both the styles and colours are limited throughout Essex. This could be due to difficulty competing with the decorative paving options of other surfaces or due to higher cost of more modern block paving alternatives.
There are some outstanding block paving installations are around in Essex. Take a look at some of these…
Driveways Essex – A popular county of charm – Postcodes of areas reviewed
Chigwell postcodes IG7 5BT, IG7 6AW, IG7 6QT and IG7 5BX – Being one of the pockets of Essex exuding style and charm a great effort but also disappointing to note that many homes have not tried to improve.
Brentwood including Hutton, Mill Hill, Hillwood Grove and Shenfield postcodes CM13, CM14 and CM15 – Overall good. Plenty of modern decorative driveway choices and in some areas great use of modern block paving designs.
Chelmsford – Springfield, Moulsham and Chelmsford Town – These areas really could do with some upgrades as too many faded driveways were identified.
