When we think of modern driveways, what exactly does we mean?
Even traditional driveway surfacing options such as block paving have contemporary options.
Putting aside Tarmacadam and Gravel lets look at some popular surfacing products for those wanting a contemporary look.
Because….who wants driveway surfacing options that limit both design and colour aspirations…..and most of all….who wants to be dull?
So let’s take a look at some modern driveway surfacing products.
Modern Driveways – Block paving
If block paving is your driveway surface of choice – Marshall’s Driveline Metro may be for you.
Driveline Metro is one of the most distinctive block paving ranges available today. The size of the blocks and ability to mix, contrast and blend different colours provide a unique design that suits driveways that cover areas of more than 60 square metres. Driveline metro is not really suitable for smaller driveways.
Look at the picture below – It shows how the elegant straight lines of a Driveline Metro driveway give a distinctive contemporary look and feel.
The mixture of colour blends light Grey, dark Grey, Maroon and Rose really create a look that is both visually pleasing and contemporary. Whilst the laying pattern suits those who want to satisfy conservative structural desires, the random colouring and long block provide the all important contemporary look.
The table below is useful if you are thinking that Driveline Metro…..may be for you!
A standard pack contains 108 blocks that will cover an area of approximately 6.7 Square Metres based on an 8-10mm joint between individual blocks.
What about cost?
At around £320 per pack, Driveline Metro is available at a surprisingly competitive price. However, the blocks are only available in one size (detailed below) and this is their main limitation, in terms of laying patterns achievable.

Other Block Paving choices
The Marshall’s Drivesett range also provide a contemporary look and some blocks are permeable!
So that means surface water can drain away without the need for drainage installation.
Modern Driveways – Resin offers a sticky option
Another popular choice for modern driveways is Resin Bound stone. For less trafficked driveways without a gradient this driveway surfacing product can be a good choice. An advantage of a resin bound installation is drainage will not need to be installed as resin bound driveways are permeable.
In terms of cost – If an overlay is possible, without the need of a new sub base, a resin bound driveway can be one of the most cost efficient options available and can give a driveway that distinctive and eye catching look.
Modern Driveways – Pattern Imprinted Concrete may cost less
Finally, another popular choice for those looking for a more cost effective option:
Pattern Imprinted Concrete colour blending options and designs can provide a really cost effective alternative to resin and block paving. More contemporary looks can be achieved by blending lighter grey colours, reds such as terracotta and sandstone. Choosing a pattern that suits a contemporary look such as Ashlar will finish things off nicely.
Everybody’s personal preferences are different. If your home has a contemporary look a contemporary drive is a must.
What would you go for? Maybe you’ve already decided.
